In September 1998, Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema, producer of The Lord of the Rings saga, discovered the Alexander farm (what we now know as Hobbiton) during an aerial search for locations for filming the films.

And it was a passion. So much so that in March 1999 they were already starting to build the sets to start filming on the undulating slopes of this farm in Matamata. Did you know that the first jobs were carried out with heavy machinery supplied by the New Zealand Army?

39 Hobbit holes were dug, trees brought in from other locations were planted, the tavern and bridge were built, the tree above Bilbo and Frodo's house was created (and I say create, because it's fake) from scratch... And in December 1999 started by filming all the scenes that take place in La Comarca.

Filming lasted about three months and then absolutely everything was dismantled, except for the Hobbit holes.

How to get to Hobbiton
The Hobbiton movie set is located about 45 minutes east of Hamilton and about two hours south of Auckland.

How much does it cost to visit Hobbiton:

Some curiosities about visiting Hobbiton

1. Be aware of your path and the amount of garbage you will actually be able to carry. No need to be a superhero. If you are traveling long distances, collect what you can.

2. Choose safe routes. No plogging on the side of the road or in dangerous regions.

3. Consider that in addition to the exercise you normally do, you will need to bend down and get up all the time to pick up trash. Assess whether your back and knees are prepared.

4. Take a bag, preferably sturdy, and even better if you have a sustainable alternative. Never put rubbish in your pocket, backpack or other personal item.

5. Gloves are always an extra guarantee of safety. And, during the pandemic, assess the need for a mask if you are around other people. Gel alcohol can also be used, but with care in the sun and not to end up in the sea.

6. Don't forget your returnable water bottle, of course! And protect yourself from the sun.

7. Do not, under any circumstances, collect dangerous items or items that represent a potential health risk, such as syringes, broken glasses, diapers, condoms or personal hygiene equipment, such as masks or gloves.

8. Don't worry about removing algae, leaves and other things from nature. By the way, be careful not to take anyone out of their natural habitat! No taking souvenir shells or taking pictures with starfish. If the garbage has been there for a long time, it can sometimes serve as a refuge for animals, especially marine animals. Be mindful of this.

9. If you find any marine or wild animal in distress on the way, try to contact the competent authority to notify them. Do not try to remove it.

10. Be aware of your posture. Always give preference to bending your knees and squatting. Avoid leaning your back because, at some point, you'll end up sacrificing it.

11. If you have the opportunity to separate the garbage on the way back, it's ideal and the planet thanks you!

12. Take pictures of your trash and share it on the Litterati app, which does a collaborative mapping of the world's trash.
