If there is one place in the world to which the word 'paradise' applies, it is French Polynesia. The overseas territory of France is made up of five archipelagos that bring together more than 115 islands where volcanic mountains covered with lush vegetation and pineapple plantations meet natural pools formed in the sea by reefs. The number is a little scary, but it's not difficult to choose which ones to visit or what to do in French Polynesia. Although more and more islands are becoming popular and opening up access to tourism, there are some of them that you cannot miss: Taha'a, Moorea and Bora Bora.

In them, the water of many shades of green is calm, transparent and full of colorful fish and friendly stingrays. All within walking distance of luxury bungalows, built over the seas of the South Pacific by the largest and most sophisticated resort chains on the planet. The result is a place so beautiful that it attracts couples from all over the world to have their wedding ceremony celebrated against this backdrop. At sunset, with your feet in the sand and the wind blowing your hair... But if you're not ready for a wedding, don't worry: there's so much more to see and do in Polynesia!

All flights arriving in the country land in the capital, Papeete, which is on the main island, Tahiti. From there, you can take a regional flight to Bora Bora or a taxi to the port, where ferries leave for the 45-minute journey to Moorea at least four times a day.

Moorea Island

When disembarking at the Moorea pier or airport, you can take one of the Polynesian taxis or pre-arrange the transfer with your hotel. Less popular and more economical than Bora Bora, this is the place to invest in accommodation in a five-star resort and discover the best things to do in Polynesia: absolutely nothing!

And the big request for anyone visiting Moorea and Polynesia in general is this: choose a good resort and stay there for at least five days. If you can, pay a little more and ask for an overwater bungalow because it's worth every penny. You will have a private deck over a natural pool where you can swim and snorkel with colorful fish every day, whenever you want, or just lie in the sun watching the unbelievable color of that sea while sipping a glass of chilled white wine.

In addition, you can book tours to explore the island by land or sea. There are horseback or 4X4 tours that visit the local village, the pineapple plantations and climb the mountains, where you have spectacular views of Moorea and surroundings. On the water, the options are sailing at sunset or taking the boat trip to swim with gray stingrays and black-tip sharks. The boat leaves from the private pier of each hotel and goes to a sandbank, from where you have a beautiful view of the island with its mountains in the background.

Bora Bora Island

Bora Bora is a place that will blow your mind right away. That's because the airport sits on an islet – or 'motu' – surrounded by the greenest, brightest sea you've ever dreamed of seeing. If you are staying at a resort, you will be picked up by a private boat directly from the landing stage. If you are staying in the capital, Vaitape, or other locations on the main island, you will have to take the ferry that makes the short journey to the pier and is free. Once on dry land, you can take a taxi or pre-arrange a transfer with your hotel.

Once settled in, follow the same exhausting routine as on Moorea: swim in the clear waters, snorkel with the colorful fish, sunbathe or just stretch out on a lounge chair to admire the scenery. But while Moorea is just a piece of land, Bora Bora is a central island surrounded by reefs and islets that form a natural saltwater lagoon. This gives tourists a few more options for activities if they really want to leave the hotel.

Bora Bora has a public beach that you cannot miss, as it is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. It's called Matira Beach (pictured below) and, as it's public, it's free for any tourist or resident of the island, whether you're staying at St. Regis or at the inn around the corner. If you are not staying in a large resort, this is where you should look for accommodation.

You can spend the day in Matira, as there are snack bars on foot of sand and in the surroundings, as well as some restaurants. If you'd rather pack a picnic instead of leaving the sand, there's a mini market nearby too, about a 20-minute walk away. There are no lounger rentals, but a few trees provide more than enough shade. In the late afternoon, don't miss the spectacle of the astro-king taking its final plunge into the waters of the South Pacific.

Another very popular tour among tourists who go to Bora Bora is the boat trip around the island. You can book at any hotel, as dozens of boats from different companies operate the tour every day, come rain (and let it rain!) or shine.
