Plogging is an activity that was born in Sweden in 2016. It combines running with garbage collection. And that's why it got the name plog, which means rubbish in Swedish + ging, from jogging. The proposal was expanded to other countries and gained new versions, with people also collecting garbage during walks on beaches and trails. Kayaking and Hawaiian canoe is also worth it! The idea is to be a fun way to exercise and, at the same time, intercept garbage and plastic waste before it reaches drains, rivers and oceans.

An activity with a strange name, which mixes activism, environmental awareness, garbage collection, protection of the oceans and sports, has been gaining more and more followers in recent years. It's Plogging, which involves picking up trash along the way while you practice some physical activity, such as walking, jogging or trekking. In times when plastics are one of the biggest threats to the oceans worldwide, and considering the importance of the oceans for our survival, plogging can join beach cleaning efforts as an alternative to mitigate the effects of pollution on seas. Nothing, of course, that replaces changing the behavior of each one of us.

Human activities are threatening the health of our oceans. About 25 million tons of garbage (8 million of them are plastic) end up in the oceans annually, destroying marine ecosystems, killing and contaminating animals and ourselves, and leaving our beaches unsuitable for bathing. When we discard a bottle of water, it has an 80% chance of ending up in the sea, because our solid waste management simply cannot handle the waste we produce. We need to keep in mind that the garbage we generate on the peak of the mountain also ends up in the sea.

you can plogging while traveling! How many times do we not hike trails, walk peacefully along beaches, go kayaking, or even go for a jog during our trips so as not to lose our momentum? If you're in a destination you love, why not help protect it? Okay, that trash isn't yours, but unfortunately it ended up in your world.

To do the activity, it's important to take a bag (if it can't be made of plastic, that would be ideal!) and take some precautions, of course. Safety is priority.

Tips for safe and responsible plogging:

1. Be aware of your path and the amount of garbage you will actually be able to carry. No need to be a superhero. If you are traveling long distances, collect what you can.

2. Choose safe routes. No plogging on the side of the road or in dangerous regions.

3. Consider that in addition to the exercise you normally do, you will need to bend down and get up all the time to pick up trash. Assess whether your back and knees are prepared.

4. Take a bag, preferably sturdy, and even better if you have a sustainable alternative. Never put rubbish in your pocket, backpack or other personal item.

5. Gloves are always an extra guarantee of safety. And, during the pandemic, assess the need for a mask if you are around other people. Gel alcohol can also be used, but with care in the sun and not to end up in the sea.

6. Don't forget your returnable water bottle, of course! And protect yourself from the sun.

7. Do not, under any circumstances, collect dangerous items or items that represent a potential health risk, such as syringes, broken glasses, diapers, condoms or personal hygiene equipment, such as masks or gloves.

8. Don't worry about removing algae, leaves and other things from nature. By the way, be careful not to take anyone out of their natural habitat! No taking souvenir shells or taking pictures with starfish. If the garbage has been there for a long time, it can sometimes serve as a refuge for animals, especially marine animals. Be mindful of this.

9. If you find any marine or wild animal in distress on the way, try to contact the competent authority to notify them. Do not try to remove it.

10. Be aware of your posture. Always give preference to bending your knees and squatting. Avoid leaning your back because, at some point, you'll end up sacrificing it.

11. If you have the opportunity to separate the garbage on the way back, it's ideal and the planet thanks you!

12. Take pictures of your trash and share it on the Litterati app, which does a collaborative mapping of the world's trash.

13. Register your photos and share them on social networks! Let's spread this practice!
